The Kühnbruch is a rift and wetland in the Saarpfalz district between Niederbexbach and the old town on the lower reaches of the Feilbach , the valley of which merges into the Bliesaue . Since 1987 (supplemented in 2015), a 29 hectare nature reserve has been designated here for the “preservation, promotion and development of extensively managed and fallow wet meadows, including the system of irrigation and drainage ditches running through them with the respective typical plant and animal communities”.

Flora and fauna

In 1983, 19 plant species were identified in Kühnbruch that are on the Red List of Endangered Species , including the only occurrence of the water bug in a wide area. The Great Wiesenknopf was observed for the first time in 2009 . The Kühnbruch and the Beeder Bruch, also designated as a nature reserve, between the old town and Beeden (formerly the Höllengraben nature reserve ) are home to rare species of birds such as snipe , marsh harrier , whinchat and water rail . The white stork , which was a regular breeding bird in this section of the Bliesaue until the 1960s, can be observed all year round as a food visitor. In 2019, for the first time, a pair of storks that brooded on the platform set up especially for this purpose in the Kühnbruch nature reserve had offspring again, as did so in 2020.
