The place was created by the monastery Benedettino di Santa Maria in Vado Fabrice around the 9th century. Louis the Pious had the castle built in Valfabbrica to protect the monastery. In the conflict between Ghibellines and Guelphs , the place stood by the Guelfan Assisi in 1202 , who faced Perugia and suffered a defeat at Collestrada. Three years later the place was destroyed by Perugia. From 1497 to 1632 the place was under the counts of Gubbio , after which it became part of the Papal States . Today's borders with Assisi were established on April 8, 1728. Due to the Napoleonic occupation, the place became an independent municipality and received the district Casacastalda, the district Giomici was added to the municipality in 1929 by Gubbio.
