Norcia (Latin Nursia ) is an Italian municipality with 4764 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Perugia in Umbria and is a member of the association The Most Beautiful Places in Italy .

Norcia is on the border with the Marche , at the foot of the "Sibylline Mountains". The municipality is located 154 km northeast of the capital Rome , 95 km southeast of the provincial and regional capital Perugia and 83 km west of the Adriatic coast near Porto d'Ascoli . The extensive municipal area extends from the valley of the Nera to the Cima Del Redentore (2448 m) in the massif of Monte Vettore , which is the highest peak in Umbria. A large part of Norcia belongs to the Monti Sibillini National Park .

Norcia is a member of the Comunità Montana Valnerina .

history

The origins of the place go back to the time of the Sabines . Norcia was founded in the 3rd century BC. Conquered by the Romans and received in 268 BC. BC Roman citizenship.

In 572 Norcia was destroyed by the Lombards , whose center was in nearby Spoleto . They were followed by the Byzantines and Saracens , so that Norcia was abandoned in 890. Attractions

In addition to the city wall from the 14th century with several city gates, the buildings around Piazza San Benedetto are particularly important: the Basilica San Benedetto , built around 1200, the town hall (around 1300) and La Castellina , a fortress-like city palace, built in the 16th century Century after a design by Vignola .

Another specialty are the lentils from Castelluccio di Norcia, which are listed as IGP (product with a protected designation of origin ).
