history
Gualdo is first mentioned as an Umbrian village called Tarsina , which dates back to 266 BC. BC was conquered by the Romans , who expanded the city now known as Tadinum into a station on the Via Flaminia . 216 BC It was destroyed by Hannibal's troops in 47 BC. By Julius Caesar and in 410 by the Visigoths under Alaric I. Further destruction followed in 966 by the troops of Emperor Otto I and finally in 1237 by a conflagration. From 1239 the city was rebuilt in its present form on the orders of Emperor Frederick II .
The battle of Busta Gallorum (also Battle of Taginae ) in 552 between the Eastern Roman army under Narses and the Ostrogoths led by Totila is said to have taken place near Gualdo Tadino. Narses' victory ushered in the fall of the Ostrogothic Empire and led Italy back to the (Eastern) Roman Empire.
From the 5th century until 1915 Gualdo was the seat of a bishopric ( Diocese of Gualdo Tadino ).
Culture and sights
In the upper area of the city is the Rocca Flea fortress ( Italian for "Fliehburg"), the exact age of which is disputed. What is certain is that it already existed in 1237 when Gualdo was last destroyed and that it was rebuilt in 1242 under Frederick II. In the late 19th century it was turned into a prison. Today it houses the city's art museum.
