history

The first settlements emerged in the 5th century BC. By the Etruscans . Even at that time there was no main town, but many small settlements that were then taken over by the Romans . The eponymous district of Campello Alto, then the main town, was created between 921 and 925 by Rovero Barone di Champeux , Baron von Borgogna (near Reims ) and who came to Italy through Lambert von Spoleto . Through him the Count family Conti di Campello came into being , who ran the fief under the name of Gualdi Ranieri . In 1226 they opposed Pope Honorius III. who then referred to them as the devil's children. In 1341 the place was conquered by Pietro Pianciani for Spoleto and remained there until November 1390, when the Counts of Campello reconquered the place and Spoleto granted the statutes and the Podestà . The local statutes gave the place on February 27, 1569 under the chairmanship of Cintio Campello , these were confirmed in 1570 by Spoleto. After the unification of Italy , the population rose from approx. 1600 to approx. 2400 in 1951. After a brief low of 1880 inhabitants in 1971, the number of inhabitants rose to approx. 2350 by 2001. In 1926 the village became part of Spoleto and remained there until 1930, when it became an independent municipality again.

Temple of the Clitumnus

According to research by archaeologists based on the radiocarbon method, the Tempietto was created between the late 6th and the late 8th century and was intended as a Christian cult building from the start. For the construction of the front in particular, material from different pagan sanctuaries was used, which can be recognized by the different shaft heights of the partly scale-shaped, partly spiral- fluted columns. An inscription on the entablature reads “SCS DEUS ANGELORUM QUI FECIT RESURECTIONEM” (Holy God of angels, who brought about the resurrection). The tympanum contains a modified Christ monogram (an upright cross connected to the Greek Rho) amid flowers and grapes . In the apse the oldest frescoes of Umbria can be seen pale: the Savior in the dome , including Peter and Paul .
