history

In prehistoric times, there was the fourth island at the location of the present-day location , from which a hilly peninsula remained due to the continuous lowering of the water level since the Middle Ages . Castiglione was an important center as early as the Etruscan period . Under Roman rule, a new city, Novum Clusium, was founded in the same place and is mentioned by Pliny. From the 6th to the 8th century the place served the Byzantines as a fortress. Towards the end of the 11th century, the place belonged to the increasingly powerful city-state of Perugia . The castle was completely destroyed in the war between Perugia and Arezzo in 1198 . Frederick II had the castle expanded into Rocca del Leone (Lion Castle) in 1247 , which later led to the current name Castiglione. At the same time, the city wall was built, which was expanded in 1325. The castle was one of the largest in Europe and was considered impregnable. After an eventful history Castiglione was the 15th century part of the Papal States , the place under Pope Julius III. subordinated to the della Corgna family .

Attractions
