Trappes is a French municipality with 32,584 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France . The inhabitants are called Trappistes . Trappes is part of the Ville nouvelle Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines , one of five planned cities in the greater Paris area.

geography

The city lies on a plateau south of Versailles . The city borders Bois-d'Arcy to the northeast, Montigny-le-Bretonneux to the east, Magny-les-Hameaux to the southeast, Le Mesnil-Saint-Denis to the south , Élancourt to the west and Plaisir to the north.

The site is urbanized and industrialized in the center. In the north there are also two larger, 87 hectares of nature reserves called Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines , some of which extend into the neighboring municipality of Montigny-le-Bretonneux. There is a 400 hectare supermarket on Lake Saint-Quentin . In the south there is a 450 hectare community forest , the Forêt domaniale de Port-Royal .

Trappes springs of Bach Maldroit that over the Mauldre in the Seine drained.

Both Route Nationale 10 - which is an extension of Motorway 12 and has a very high volume of traffic - and the Paris-Montparnasse - Chartres railway line , for which there is a train station in the city center, run through the municipality . Both traffic routes form an ugly section through the municipal area.

history

The name Trappes probably comes from the Gallic place name trebo , the village. The area was settled as early as the Neolithic .

In the 17th century, part of the community was added to the property of King Louis XIV .

  • In 1849 the railway line and the station were built.
  • On September 24, 1852, Henri Giffard reached Trappes from Paris in a steam-powered airship he had built . Its speed was about 7 km / h. To move forward, he used a small steam engine. This trip is considered the first manned motorized flight in history.
  • 1911 were locomotives - depot and rail yard built the decommissioned at the end of the 20th century in stages and sidings for passenger trains was rebuilt.
  • In 1944, the Allied bombardments of the railway infrastructure caused great damage to the city, and 75% of the buildings were damaged.
  • On July 10, 1970, the implementation of the "Ville Nouvelle" concept of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines began, which included the municipality of Trappes. This was followed by the construction of large housing estates in prefabricated construction, which mainly attracted poorer sections of the population and immigrants . The isolated location led to social problems, so that Trappes has hit the headlines again and again in recent years for crime and Islamism .
  • In 2000 the von Trappes synagogue was badly damaged by fire. After the police initially assumed an Islamist arson attack, it turned out to be an accident.
  • During the unrest in France in 2005 , 27 buses were destroyed by fire in a depot in Trappes. After an identity check, serious night-time riots broke out in Trappes in July 2013.
