Élancourt is a French municipality with 25,400 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France .
geography
Neighboring municipalities are Coignières , Jouars-Pontchartrain , La Verrière , Le Mesnil-Saint-Denis , Maurepas , Plaisir and Trappes .
history
At the beginning of the 20th century, Élancourt had 598 inhabitants who lived scattered over 734 hectares. The population consisted mainly of farmers. That did not change until the day the ville nouvelle ("New City") program was launched to make the settlement of the Paris region more balanced. Together with its neighboring municipalities, Élancourt forms the new city of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.
Urban development
Despite the rapid changes, the city manages to keep traces of its past. Some of the most beautiful are the 12th century Romanesque church of Saint-Médard and the Coming of the Knights Templar, founded in 1180 and recently renovated . Its hamlets, which flourished in the 16th century, the Launay, the Grande and the Petite Villedieu, as well as the Coudrays, have now become districts.
In 2001, the city was awarded the second prize in the Villes Fleuries (“Blooming Cities”) program.
Old town
Set in the small valley, the village with its limestone houses and the Saint-Médard church is evidence of another age. Old and contemporary buildings harmonize perfectly with one another in the meadow green landscape.
plateau
The plateau in the south of Élancourt has been densely populated since 1970. Mainly houses and blocks of flats can be found there.
Clef de Saint-Pierre
The Clef de Saint-Pierre, which formerly belonged to the municipality of Plaisir , was attached to Élancourt in 1983, as Plaisir left the metropolitan municipality . This district, which was an industrial area at the beginning, changed quickly: Many shops are now available to the newly arrived residents. Nevertheless, many jobs were effectively lost here in the same period.
