Saint-Martin-de-Bréthencourt is located in the south of the Yvelines department on the border of Beauce and Hurepoix . In the east, the municipality borders on the Essonne department . It consists of the villages of Saint-Martin with church and Mairie and the slightly higher Bréthencourt with a medieval fortress.

In the 11th century, Guido von Rochefort had the Bréthencourt castle built, of which only the ruins of the donjon remain today. The lordship of Bréthencourt was successively owned by the Montfort and Vendôme families, acquired by the L'Hôpital in 1653 and finally by the Rohan-Rochefort in 1788.
