Horst Kuhnert (born June 22, 1939 in Schweidnitz , Province of Silesia ) is a German sculptor .

life and work

Kuhnert studied from 1957 to 1962 at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under Heinrich Wildemann . After initially devoting himself to abstract painting , he turned to sculptural work in 1963, whereby he was committed to a strict, constructive-concrete way of working from the start. Starting in 1964, the first reliefs in polyester were created with the series of “spatial surfaces” , which were followed shortly thereafter by the first “spatial bodies”. Kuhnert was one of the first German artists to use the new material polyester (more precisely: glass fiber reinforced polyester resins) on a large scale for artistic works. In his new work he combined the strict tradition of Concrete Art with organically soft shapes made possible by the new material. The use of polyester shaped his work in the 1960s and 1970s and soon earned him numerous public contracts. In the 1980s, other materials such as V2A steel were added. At the same time, with the group of works "Stabil - Unabil", the first works were created in which Kuhnert dealt with "constructed deconstruction". Since 2011 he has also been creating pictures in which the sculptor Kuhnert transfers spatial problems into complex two-dimensional arrangements and thereby creates highly complex structures.

In 1970 Horst Kuhnert was awarded the Prize of the Kingdom of Nepal on the occasion of the International Art Exhibition in Kathmandu , and in 1985 he received the Promotion Prize of the State of Lower Saxony. Since the mid-1980s, Kuhnert has been a member of the Constructive Tendencies group , to which Karl Duschk , Peter Staechelin , Anton Stankowski and Hermann Waibel also belong.

Horst Kuhnert is a member of the German Association of Artists .
