Roland Phleps (born August 18, 1924 in Sibiu , Romania ; † April 20, 2020 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German sculptor , neurologist and psychiatrist .

life and work

Roland Phleps came from a family of doctors. He passed the school leaving examination at the Brukenthal School in 1943 and was a soldier in 1944/45. After his release from British captivity, he settled in Nürtingen . From 1946 to 1950 he studied medicine in Tübingen and Göttingen and graduated with a state examination and doctorate in Tübingen. From 1951 to 1959 he was an assistant doctor at the clinics in Tübingen, Lübeck, Esslingen and finally Freiburg, where he became a specialist in neurology and psychiatry. From 1959 he settled in Freiburg as a freelance neurologist and psychiatrist.

Since 1983, simple basic geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, circular areas, ellipses or parallelograms have determined the artist's work. Aluminum sheets, from 1992 stainless steel sheets, he bent into spatial constructs that he himself assigned to Concrete Art .

From 1993 to 2000 Roland Phleps took part in various solo and group exhibitions in galleries and in public places. Since 1997 there have been permanent exhibitions with several of his works in the Stadtgarten , on Waltersberg and in the clinical center in Freiburg . In 2010 another permanent exhibition “Concrete Art by Roland Phleps” was created at Sponeck Castle in Jechtingen am Kaiserstuhl .

The artist lived and worked in Freiburg, where he died in April 2020 at the age of 95. He left behind his wife and three children, and another son was killed in an accident in the early 1980s.

Foundation for Concrete Art

In 1997 Phleps founded the Roland Phleps Foundation for Concrete Art , and in 1999 a sculpture hall with an exhibition of his works was opened. It regularly hosts exhibitions by artists who are close to Concrete Art . The most famous exhibitors include:
