St-Pierre Church

Ablis is a commune in the Yvelines department in the region Ile-de-France . It is located in the arrondissement of Rambouillet in the canton of Rambouillet . The place is about 30 kilometers south of Paris . The community covers around 26 square kilometers, most of which (80 percent) are used for agriculture, at 155 meters above sea level . It has 3439 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The Autoroute A 11 ( L'Océane ), which leads to Nantes , begins at Ablis .

history

The place is recorded in 1140 as Ableis, 1250 as Abbayes, 1516 as Ableys, in the 17th century as Ablys and in the 18th century as Ablais. Gradually it belonged to different monasteries.

Ablis was destroyed by German troops in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 because the residents of the village had supported a 1,500-strong unit of the so-called Francs-tireurs , which caused a German unit to be ambushed.
