history

The village, first mentioned around 1180 ("Winolfhein"), which belonged to the Count Palatinate of Tübingen in the 12th century, is located on a flat hill between the Ammer and Neckar valleys . From these it soon came to the Counts of Hohenberg , who held court on the northeastern "plain" above the village. This district court was relocated to the city of Rottenburg in 1378 with imperial approval . With the county of Hohenberg , the village came to Austria in 1381 and to Württemberg in 1805 ( Oberamt Rottenburg , 1938 Tübingen district). The place was given to various noble families as a fief until 1762, when Austria took over the severely fragmented rulership rights after changing ownership: to the Amman (1389), later to the dyers and the Eicher, both of whom called themselves after Wendelsheim the Lords of Suntheim called Ufenloch (1488), whose property belonged to the knightly canton of Neckar-Black Forest in the 16th century .

On February 1, 1972, Wendelsheim was incorporated into the city of Rottenburg am Neckar.

politics

Community partnerships

Wendelsheim signed a partnership agreement on October 12, 1979 with the French municipality of Ablis ( Île-de-France , around 30 km south of Paris ). The relationship arose through a Wendelsheimer who played as a prisoner of war in Ablis in the local soccer team. As early as 1969 there were meetings between the soccer teams of the two partner towns. In the meantime, the clubs and the youth regularly visit each other. The Abliser Straße in Wendelsheim is intended to commemorate the partnership.

Culture and sights

Fairy tale lake

The Märchensee is located in a quarry that was operated until the 1960s near the Pfaffenberg near Wendelsheim. The quarry has meanwhile been recognized as an extensive natural monument and is under nature protection. The Märchensee is one of the rare spawning grounds for midwife toads . For some time now it has been losing more and more water as the subsoil has become more fragile over the years. However, not the entire quarry is covered by the Märchensee. Part of the quarry is dry, there are other small lakes.

Buildings

  • Village parish church St. Katharina: Choir with wall paintings, around 1400 - redesign of the church in neo-Gothic style in 1895.
