history

prehistory

Finds of a flint knife and a stone ax in 1973 show that the Ergenzingen area was already settled in the Neolithic Age. The "Baisinger Bühl" is considered a burial place of a Celtic prince of the Hallstatt period . In 1991, during aerial photographs, circles were discovered in the ground, which indicate further barrows. Settlement remains are also believed to date from the Roman period between 74 and 260 AD. But they have not yet been excavated. The ending of the place name -ingen indicates a settlement in the Alamann period, as does the regular borderline of the large district. During the construction of the Gäubahn , several row graves were found on the Killberg.

middle Ages

The place Ergenzingen was first mentioned in a document around 777. The large market town, conveniently located in the Korngäu or Upper Gäu, celebrated its 1200th anniversary in 1982 (776 - 778/782 Codex of Lorsch Monastery as "Corgozsinga" or "Argozsinga"). In the 12th century, sovereignty lay in the hands of the Tübingen Count Palatine , and since the later 13th century in those of the Counts of Hohenberg . With their county, the village came to the Austrian foothills in 1381 . From the 13th to the 16th century, noble families named themselves after the place (landlord of Ergenzingen 1325–1431, branch of Ergenzingen 1401–1532). In the towns of Horb and Rottenburg , too, several families belonging to the urban upper class named themselves after the town in the Gäu.

Modern times

In 1635 112 inhabitants fell victim to the plague . In the 16th and 17th centuries, the property was very fragmented. In 1772 the Ergenzingers had to pay taxes to 29 spiritual and secular landlords . In 1805 the place fell to the Electorate of Württemberg , which was elevated to a kingdom the following year . In the course of the new administrative structure of Württemberg Ergenzingen came to the Oberamt Rottenburg . Around 1860, the first clubs were founded with the Liederkranz, the music association and the volunteer fire brigade . In 1879, with the opening of the Gäubahn between Stuttgart and Freudenstadt, the town was connected to the Württemberg railway network . In 1909 Ergenzingen was connected to the electricity network and in 1914 to the telephone network. In the course of a district reform in Württemberg during the Nazi era , Ergenzingen became part of the Horb district in 1938 . On the occasion of the regional reform, the community of Eckenweiler was incorporated on December 1, 1971. On December 1, 1972, Ergenzingen became a district of Rottenburg am Neckar and thus belongs to the Tübingen district .

politics

Town twinning

On July 7, 2000, the partnership between Ergenzingen and the Austrian-Burgenland community of Gols was formally sealed. The first contacts from the Gäu to Burgenland began at the end of the 1960s, and in August 1989 local administrations and associations from both towns had guaranteed their friendship in a document. The connections between Ergenzingen and Gols have deepened and strengthened ever since.

Holy Spirit Church
  • The Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit is a landmark of the place. The church of St. Nazarius and the parish are mentioned for the first time in 780. The right of patronage, held by Archduchess Mechthild in the 15th century, finally came to Württemberg in 1809 through those of Validlingen , that of Ehingen (1515), that of Neuneck (1614) and the Johanniter Commandery of Hemmendorf (1619) . Only the tower and the late Gothic choir (1479) remained from the late medieval predecessor building when today's parish church of St. Spirit was built (1964/1967).
  • Since 1951 the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary have built up and expanded their southern German provincialate on the Liebfrauenhöhe ( Church of the Coronation of Mary 1961/1966 by the architects Otto Karl Müller and Franz Brümmendorf, vocational and technical school with boarding school ).
  • The oldest residential building in Ergenzingen dates from 1460 and is a typical 3-zone half-timbered building of the time.

Ergenzingen station in 2014, before modernization

Ergenzingen was always on two important traffic axes: the connection to the south to Switzerland and the connection from Strasbourg to Reutlingen. The town's transport links were getting better and better: in 1784 the so-called Breisgauer Straße was expanded as a road , and since 1879 there has been a train station on the Gäubahn with a regular connection every hour towards Stuttgart and Freudenstadt / Rottweil or Singen. In addition, the S41 line of the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn runs once a day to Herrenberg from Monday to Friday and in the opposite direction via Freudenstadt to Forbach (Baden) or Karlsruhe (only on Fridays).

On January 1, 2020, the Ergenzingen train station was integrated into the VVS tariff.
