As one of the first verifiable members of the sex , the brothers Reinbodo and Friedrich von Validlingen are named in documents around the year 1100. From the 14th century onwards, their descendants settled in Berneck in the Oberamt Nagold and lived there with the Lords of Berneck. Both sexes played a leading role during the Schlegler Wars, as a result of which Berneck, one of the main bases of the Schleglerbund , was conquered and destroyed by Count Eberhard II of Württemberg .

Around 1400 the lords of Validlingen came into the sole possession of Berneck Castle , which remained a condominium of the family for a long time (until the beginning of the 20th century) . As a member of the Knight Society Sankt Jörgenschild they belonged to the Swabian Federation in 1488 . They formed an imperial rule and belonged to the imperial knighthood in the knightly canton of Neckar-Black Forest . In 1805 the property came under Württemberg sovereignty.

In 1515 the dynasty received the office of hereditary treasurer of Württemberg, which also included a share in Hohenentringen Castle . In addition, the VALLING possessions included: Neuchâtel , Sindlingen , Poltringen , Oberndorf , Deufringen , Pflummer , Pfäffingen , Zavelstein , Vollmaringen and goods in the Eifel . Through marriage in 1762 parts of Adelmannsfelden could be acquired, and thus the affiliation to the knight canton Kocher . However, it was not possible to keep this in the family's possession for long.

The sex was enrolled in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the baron class . Since 1908 one line has carried the name Validlingen-Schlepegrell . Branches of the family still exist today.
