Berneck Castle

The Berneck also Upper lock called, is a partially preserved Höhenburg located on a promontory between Köllbach and Bruderbachtal at Berneck (lock tray 20), a current area of Altensteig in Calw in Baden-Württemberg .

The castle was built around 1050 to 1100 by the noble lords of Berneck (Bernech) and mentioned at the beginning of the 12th century. From 1294 they are attested as a ministerial noble family, in the entourage of the Counts of Hohenberg . The family, which died out in the 16th century, was inherited by the lords of Validlingen in the 14th century . The castle remained a condominium of the sex until the beginning of the 20th century .

After fires in 1559 and 1660, the Upper Castle was built in 1674 . From 1846 to 1847, after another fire, today's neo-Gothic residential buildings were built.

In the castle is a curtain wall castle with dungeon from humpback ashlar masonry with battlements and corner towers. The 26.6 meter long, 38 meter high and 3.3 meter thick shield wall has been preserved and is visible from afar. The trench carved out of the rock, which secured the city and the castle from the outside, has been filled.
