particularities |
The Märchensee is a lake in the Rottenburg district of Wendelsheim in the Tübingen district in Baden-Württemberg . It got its name because of its miraculous creation. The lake was created by flooding overnight.
location
The Märchensee is located in a quarry that was operated until the 1960s near the Pfaffenberg near Wendelsheim. Sandstones of the reed sandstone formation in Mittelkeuper were mined, which can still be studied in walls several hundred meters long and up to five meters high. For some time now it has been losing more and more water as the subsoil has become more fragile over the years. However, not the entire quarry is covered by the Märchensee. Part of the quarry is dry, there are other small lakes.
fauna
The quarry was declared a two-dimensional natural monument and is therefore under nature protection. It is also protected as a geotope under the name of Abandoned Quarry at Märchensee, Wendelsheim . The Märchensee is one of the rare spawning grounds for midwife toads , which was founded in 1928 through a release.
