history

La Madeleine Castle

Chevreuse is first mentioned as "Cavrosa" in a papal document from 980. In the 11th century, Guy de Chevreuse began building the La Madeleine castle, which still dominates the town today . The donjon , which was still surrounded by a wooden palisade , undoubtedly dates from this period . Walls were not built until the 12th century.

King Francis I raised Chevreuse to the duchy, which he was able to give to his mistress Anne de Pisseleu d'Heilly after he had married her to Jean IV. De Brosse . In 1551, Choiseul and Dampierre were sold to François de Lorraine, duc de Guise , making the latter the residence of the Dukes of Chevreuse .

In 1693 King Louis XIV bought the duchy with the aim of enlarging the park of the Palace of Versailles , but then abandoned the plan and ceded the area to the monastery of Saint-Cyr , which Chevreuse owned until the revolution found.
