Montfort l'Amaury is a French commune with 2,940 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Rambouillet and the canton of Aubergenville .
geography
The municipality extends north of the Rambouillet forest and is part of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Park . The city lies on a mountain spur 183 meters high. It borders on Grosrouvre , Les Mesnuls and Saint-Léger-en-Yvelines in the south, Bazoches-sur-Guyonne in the east and Méré in the north.
history
The castle above the city dates back to 996 and goes back to King Robert II . It was destroyed by the English during the Hundred Years War . The dominion of Montfort was raised to a county in favor of Simon IV. De Montfort .
Montfort-l'Amaury was owned by the Montfort family from the beginning of the 11th century. Amaury I had the city wall built, remains of which can still be seen today.
The county of Montfort-l'Amaury was united with the Duchy of Brittany when the heiress of Montfort married Duke Arthur II in 1364. With Brittany, the county came to the French crown in 1532 under Francis I.
