Thierry Gilardi (born July 26, 1958 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye , † March 25, 2008 in Le Port-Marly , Yvelines Department ) was a French television journalist and sports commentator , mainly for football and rugby .

Gilardi, who was interested in sports from childhood, played 15-a-side rugby for the club in his hometown since he was eleven years old and continued this sport until he was 28 years old. After obtaining his diploma at the Paris Institute for Political Science , he began his journalistic career at France Inter in 1982 , where he quickly became a regular radio reporter for football broadcasts.

At Canal +

In 1987 he joined the pay TV channel Canal + , where he initially continued to work as a reporter until he was entrusted with the moderation of the programs Jour de Foot (until 1995) and L'Équipe du dimanche (1995-2002) from 1992 ; From 2002 to 2005 he also directed Canal + programs on the Champions League together with guest expert Michel Platini . It was also used for television broadcasts of the 1992 , 1996 , 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics .

From 1997 to 1999 he was head of the football editorial team at the broadcaster, then until 2001 head of service and head of the entire sports division.

Back to state television

In 2005, Thierry Gilardi succeeded Thierry Roland at TF1 . There he presented the high-ratings program Téléfoot about the games of the French first division and the international matches of the French national team , including the World Cup in Germany . The expert at his side was Jean-Michel Larqué until the end .

There he was finally able to present his favorite sport -  "Football has become my job, but rugby has remained my passion"  -, especially in the Télérugby program and as a reporter during the 2007 Rugby World Cup alongside his colleague Thierry Lacroix .

The father of three, who was chairman of the rugby club of Saint-Germain-en-Laye until the early 1990s and vice-chairman of Stade Français CASG from 1997 until his death , died of heart failure at the age of 50 . In his honor, the French national soccer player Franck Ribéry wore a t-shirt during the international match against England - Thierry Gilardi was supposed to be commenting on this encounter for TF1 - on the day after his death, on which he commemorated the sports journalist, for whom the spectators at the Stade de France had previously raised to a minute's silence. This is what Ribéry showed the crowd in lieu of celebrating a goal after scoring a goal in that game. Spectators and players also honored the deceased in the French rugby championship.
