The Pontine Islands (also called "Pontine Archipelago" or "Ponza Islands") are an archipelago in the Tyrrhenian part of the Mediterranean. The archipelago belongs to the province of Latina in the Italian region of Lazio . It consists of the six islands of Ponza (eponymous for the archipelago and capital), Gavi , Palmarola and Zannone in the west, which form the municipality of Ponza , and Ventotene and Santo Stefano (municipality of Ventotene) in the east.
In total, the archipelago is permanently inhabited by around 4100 people. In the summer months, during the high season , however, there are significantly more people on the islands.
