Palmarola ( Italian Isola di Palmarola ) is the third largest island within the Italian archipelago of the Pontine Islands , which also includes Ponza , Gavi , Zannone , Ventotene and Santo Stefano .
Palmarola is located about 10 km west of the main island of Ponza and belongs to the municipality of Ponza . It has an area of 136 hectares. The maximum height is on Monte Guarniere, which rises 249 meters above sea level. There are obsidian deposits on the island that were already exploited in prehistoric times.
The island is a nature reserve and is only inhabited during the summer months. In these the island is visited by many tourists who explore Palmarola with rental boats. One of the island's attractions is the Grotta di Mezzogiorno . On throughout the year dives take place as the sea in the region very clear and so for diving schools is very attractive. The diving area near the Grotta di Mezzogiorno has a depth of 20 meters.
In 537, Pope Silverius died in exile on Palmarola.
