The island of Zannone belongs to the group of Pontine Islands in the Gulf of Gaeta in the Tyrrhenian Sea .
location
The island is the third smallest of the group and only measures around 0.9 square kilometers. The highest point is the 194 m high Monte Pellegrino, on which the forest administration maintains a station and a small exhibition. The island is northeast of the main island of Ponza . Politically it belongs to the municipality of Ponza in the province of Latina (Region of Latium ). In 1979 it was integrated into the Circeo National Park .
population
The Santo Spirito di Zannone Monastery was located on the island in the 13th century , but was moved to the mainland shortly before the end of this century. Today the island is uninhabited.
fauna
The island is a migratory bird base. It is home to various species of falcons . There are also reptiles and insects . In the 1920s the mouflon was introduced.

The vegetation has a Mediterranean character with gorse , agaves and opuntia .
