Santo Stefano is an uninhabited island in the Gulf of Gaeta off the Italian coast, west of Naples . It belongs geographically to the Pontine Islands (southeast group) and administratively to the municipality of Ventotene, and is 1.6 km southeast of the island of Ventotene . The island consists of a rock with an area of about 27 hectares and a height of up to 80 meters above sea level.

On the island there is a horseshoe-shaped building that Ferdinand IV had built as a prison in 1795 by Major Antonio Winspeare (1739-1820) and architect Francesco Carpi . There were among others Luigi Settembrini , Carmine Crocco , Gaetano Bresci , Gino Lucetti and Sandro Pertini . The prison was closed in 1965 and has been abandoned ever since.
