Big Sister System and Network Monitor is free software released under the GNU General Public License . Big Sister network monitor is generally known as Big Sister , but there is a risk of confusion with other monitoring projects that are also referred to by this name.

With Microsoft's .NET framework, BigSister can also run under Microsoft Windows .

BigSister is the open source version of the monitoring software BigBrother from Quest and is accordingly compatible with it. BigSister offers a collection of plugins for network, host and service monitoring as well as a web interface for querying the collected data. It is also possible to display the collected performance data as a graph with the help of RRDtool .

functionality

The mother process, i.e. the BigSister server, obtains its data from agents who use them in a variety of ways, e.g. B. via SNMP , Perl programs etc. collect. The data is sent from the agent to the BigSister server via the TCP .

In this way, complex networks and systems can be monitored, BigSister can save their status in MySQL databases or text files and display the current results in a table on a web interface. If an error occurs, the responsible administrator will e.g. B. notified by email.
