in the Île-de-France region

Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (pronounced [sɛ.kɑ.tɛ.ɑn‿iv.lin] ) is a scale in the 1970s "New City" ( Ville nouvelle ) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France , around 30 km southwest of Paris . Since 2004 it has had the legal form of a communauté d'agglomération . It got its current layout with effect from January 1, 2016 through a merger with a neighboring community association. Since then it has comprised twelve parishes. The administrative headquarters are in Montigny-le-Bretonneux . The population is about 230,000

Historical development

The association of municipalities goes back to the establishment of the Ville nouvelle Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in 1972. In the 1960s, it was decided to set up several such planned cities in the outskirts of Paris ( Banlieue ) in order to remedy the overpopulation of the capital and its immediate suburbs. The church of Saint-Quentin-les-sources in the municipality of Montigny-le-Bretonneux, dedicated to Saint Quintinus , was chosen as the center of the new town . The name of the new city and the association of municipalities is derived from this. Until then, the associated communities had only been small villages, the population of which rose sharply in the 1970s thanks to the new large housing estates (from a total of 24,866 in 1968 to 93,906 in 1982). Most of the apartments were HLM ( Habitations à loyer modéré , French equivalent of social housing ). Single-family houses made up 25 percent of the new residential buildings, the lowest proportion of the five Villes nouvelles around Paris.

Thereafter, there were several changes in the organizational structure, until a Syndicat d'agglomération nouvelle (SAN) was formed in 1984 , from which a Communauté d'agglomération finally emerged with effect from January 1, 2004 .

On January 1, 2016, the association of municipalities merged with the Communauté de communes de l'Ouest Parisien (with 3 municipalities), two further municipalities ( Coignières and Maurepas ) also joined the association. On this occasion, the corporation was re-established under an almost identical name.
