The Vélodrome National is a hall with a cycle track in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines , France , around 35 kilometers from central Paris . The French cycling association Fédération Française de Cyclisme has its headquarters there.

The Vélodrome National opened on January 13, 2014, and on January 30 the first major event took place, a national competition between track cyclists from Great Britain and France. The next day, 102-year-old Robert Marchand improved his own hour record in the +100 age group to 26.952 kilometers in the new Velodrome .

The Velodrome was originally planned for the 2012 Olympic Games , for which Paris applied but was not awarded the contract. The cycling track has the required length of 250 meters to be used for official international competitions. The building complex, which has a BMX area in the outdoor area , cost 68 million euros. 75 percent of the costs came from the national lottery. The interior can also be used for badminton and other sports as well as for large events.

The UCI Track World Championships were held in the Vélodrome National from February 18 to 22, 2015, and the following year the European Track Championships took place here .

prehistory

Since the Vélodrome d'Hiver was demolished in 1959 , there has been no closed cycle track in France. It is said that a French sprinter star allegedly complained about this personally to President de Gaulle when he was honored with the Ordre national du Mérite in 1966 . De Gaulle had then promised him to build a railway in the Île-de-France .

Since then, however, there has only been one mobile cycling track in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy , which was temporarily set up for major events such as the Prix des Nations ; the track cyclists from the Paris region trained on the short 166-meter track in the training center of the Institut National du Sport, de l'Expertise et de la Performance (INSEP). In 2012, the Vélodrome Couvert Régional Jean Stablinski was opened in northern France .
