The 42nd Ryder Cup was held from September 25th to September 30th 2018 on the Albatros Course of the golf club Le Golf National in Guyancourt , Île-de-France in France . The US defending champions from 2016 competed under the leadership of their captain Jim Furyk against the hosts from Europe under captain Thomas Bjørn . Europe won the competition by 17½ to 10½.

Originally six countries had shown interest in the organization, but Sweden did not submit an official application. Had applied:

The 8 leading golfers of the American Ryder Cup ranking, which resulted from the prize money of the PGA Tour and selected major global tournaments, were eligible to start for the US team . These were supplemented with four players ( Captain's Picks ) selected by Captain Jim Furyk . Jim Furyk initially nominated former Ryder Cup players Davis Love III , Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker and later David Duval , Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar as assistant ( Vice Captains ) . Woods was later named to the players as captain's pick and no longer officially serves as vice captain.

Europe

The European team was formed from the four best professionals on the European money list and the golf world rankings. For a player qualified on both rankings, the next best qualified player in the golf world rankings would have moved up. For Thomas Bjørn it was the first appointment as team captain. As Vice Captains he first nominated Robert Karlsson and later Luke Donald , Pádraig Harrington , Graeme McDowell and Lee Westwood . The German Martin Kaymer was not part of the European team for the first time since 2008.

Supporting program

As part of the Ryder Cup, the Junior Ryder Cup was held on September 24th and 25th at Golf Disneyland near Paris, with six boys and six girls up to the age of 18 competing against each other. The USA beat the European team by 12½ to 11½ and won for the sixth time in a row.

In a celebrity match on September 25th, ten pairs of celebrities competed against each other over ten holes in a scramble, which the USA won. Participants were u. a. Michael Phelps , Alessandro Del Piero , Yannick Noah , Condoleezza Rice , Luis Figo , Luke Wilson , Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson .

On Thursday, September 26th, former team captains competed against each other in the Past Captains Match . Then there was an opening ceremony followed by a concert with the singer Jain and the Kaiser Chiefs .

Others

On Friday morning, Brooks Koepka pulled a tee. The golf ball hit a spectator in the face, who then went blind in one eye.
