The 41st Ryder Cup was held from September 27 to October 2, 2016 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska , Minnesota . The European defending champions from 2014 competed under the leadership of their captain Darren Clarke against the hosts from the USA under Captain Davis Love III .
Hazeltine National Golf Club hosted the PGA Championship in 2002 & 2009 . The par 72 course is measured from the championship tees at 7628 yards. For the Ryder Cup, the usual order of play of the holes has been changed. Holes 1-4 and 14-18 were played as front nine, holes 10-13 and 5-9 were played as back nine.

The 8 leading golfers on the PGA money ranking were eligible to start for the US team . These were supplemented with four players selected by Captain Davis Love III ( Captain's Picks ). Davis Love nominated former Ryder Cup players Jim Furyk , Tom Lehman , Steve Stricker , Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson as assistant ( Vice Captains ) . For Davis Love it was the second appointment as captain of the US team after 2012.
Europe
The European team was made up of the four or five best professionals on the European and world money lists. For a player qualified on both ranking lists, the next best qualified player on the world money ranking would have moved up. It was Darren Clarke's first appointment as team captain. He nominated Thomas Bjørn , Padraig Harrington , Paul Lawrie , Ian Poulter and Sam Torrance as Vice Captains .

Mode / game results
A total of 28 games were played in matchplay mode. Four foursome each on Friday and Saturday morning, and four fourball games each in the afternoon . Traditionally, twelve individual matches followed on the final day. Whether the fourballs or the foursomes are played first is determined by the captain of the host team.
