history

Chaska's history testifies to the influence of the indigenous people. The first inhabitants were the builders of the burial mounds that are located on the town square. Later the Dakota (also known as the Sioux) were the main inhabitants of this region. The age of written history begins in Chaska around 1769.

In 1776, Jonathan Carver explored the country along the Minnesota River and documented his travels. French-Canadian fur traders used the watercourses for transportation in the early 19th century and traded with the Dakota in the early 18th century. During this time Jean-Baptiste Faribault founded a trading post in Chaska, which was then called Little Rapids.

In 1851, the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux officially allowed white settlers to settle in the area. One of the first newcomers was Thomas Andrew Holmes, who made the claim to 20 acres in August 1851 and thus determined the area of the future city.

The name Chaska comes from the Dakota language and is often given to a firstborn son. According to the records, in 1852 a David L. Fuller bought the land in Shaska (sic!) From Holmes. In 1857 the site was cleared and leveled by the Shaska Company . In the same year, the construction of the first corthouse in Carver County began on the spot where the post office and bank are located in the center of Chaska today. Chaska was registered as a village in 1871 and received a charter in 1891 , with which the place was elevated to a city .

Since there is high quality clay in Chaska, brick production developed from 1857 . By the 1880s, Chaska had developed into a brick manufacturing center in Minnesota. The bricks were transported to St. Paul by ship. Though the city flourished from the steamship trade, it wasn't until the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway was built in 1873 that it grew.

At the beginning of the 20th century, other industries were established. This included processing sugar beet, canning factories for sauerkraut, beans, corn and tomatoes, flour mills and butter production.

During the first half of the 20th century, Chaska's population was around 2000 people. The city began to transform in the 1950s when urbanization began in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas . As a result, new jobs and new residential areas were created in Chaska, which in turn brought new residents to the place.

In early 2005, the City of Chaska annexed the areas of the Chaska Township that were still free from parishes . The construction of a new motorway-like section of the US Highway 212 runs through Chaska. It connects the place with the center of the Twin Cities . The city administration expects further growth of the city from this and from an express bus connection.
