Career

Shane Gersich attended Holy Family Catholic School in his youth and played for their ice hockey team in a regional high school league in his home state of Minnesota. During this time, the attacker made his international debut when he took part in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games , where he finished fourth with the team. At the end of the 2012/13 season he gained his first experience with the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League (USHL), but moved to the following season in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the American Association USA Hockey . With their junior teams he also took part in the USHL game operations, while the NTDP selections also act as junior national teams, so that he represented the USA at the U18 World Cup in 2014 and won the gold medal there. The winger was then selected in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in 134th position by the Washington Capitals before returning to the Omaha Lancers and spending the 2014/15 season there.

In the fall of 2015, Gersich enrolled at the University of North Dakota , for whose Fighting Hawks he was now in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), a league of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As a freshman , he won the NCAA championship with the team as the best college team in the United States. He increased his personal statistics significantly the following year when he recorded 37 scorer points in 40 games . Finally, another year later, in March 2018, the Capitals provided him with an entry-level contract and made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) a little later . After three appearances in the regular season, two games followed in the conference semifinals of the 2018 playoffs against the Pittsburgh Penguins , before the Capitals subsequently won the Stanley Cup . Since Gersich did not play a game in the final series, his name was not immortalized on the trophy.
