Paul Newell Broten (born October 27, 1965 in Roseau , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 360 games for the New York Rangers , Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues in the course of his active career between 1984 and 1999 of the National Hockey League on the position of the right winger . Broten also spent another part of his career in the International Hockey League and American Hockey League , where he also played over 300 games.
Career
Paul Broten began his career as a hockey player in the team of the University of Minnesota , for which he was active from 1984 to 1988 in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . As a high school player, he had previously been selected by the New York Rangers in the fourth round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft as the 77th player . After the winger had come in the 1988/89 season exclusively for New York's farm team , the Denver Rangers , in the International Hockey League , he played regularly for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League from 1989 to 1993 . He also ran in some games for their other farm teams, the Flint Spirits from the IHL and the Binghamton Rangers from the American Hockey League .
On October 3, 1993, Broten was selected in the NHL Waiver Draft by the Dallas Stars , for which he was active in the NHL in the following two years. He was then given on October 2, 1994 in exchange for Guy Carbonneau to the St. Louis Blues . In the NHL squad of the team from Missouri, however, he could not prevail, so he ran mainly for their AHL farm team Worcester IceCats . From 1996 to 1998 he played for one year each in the International Hockey League for the Fort Wayne Komets and Cincinnati Cyclones . Most recently he went to Europe, where he scored 23 scorer points in 50 games in the 1998/99 season , eight of which were goals, for the Berlin Capitals in the German Ice Hockey League .
International
Broten took part in the qualification for the 1999 World Cup for the USA . In three games he stayed without points and received two penalty minutes.
