Edward Van Sloan
Edward Van Sloan (born November 1, 1882 in Chaska , Minnesota , † March 6, 1964 in San Francisco , California ) was an American actor .
life and career
Edward Van Sloan grew up with three sisters with his mother in California, the father had died early. His family was of German origin. Van Sloan worked as a commercial artist until the First World War , then he was drawn to the stage as a theater actor. In 1930 he came to Hollywood to play the role of Doctor Van Helsing, which he had previously played in the play Dracula on Broadway , in the film adaptation of the same name . He represented this role again in Dracula's Daughter ( Dracula's Daughter ) in 1936. Since Dracula he was on roles similar to the Dr. Van Helsing and played in the horror classics Frankenstein (1931) and The Mummy (1932) also clever scientists who, like Helsing, were the first to recognize the dangers of horror creatures. Van recognizable Sloan was mainly by its slow distinctive speech style with a rolled R .
Van Sloan not only played the "good guys", but also took on roles in other horror films in which he switched to the evil side, such as in Behind the Mask (1932). Outside of the horror scene and especially in the later years of his career, the roles of the gray-haired character actor remained mostly small. Every now and then, his performances weren't even mentioned in the credits. In the 1940s he played a number of National Socialists in propaganda films before he retired from the acting business in 1947 after making almost 90 films. Until his death, he only gave a few interviews. He was married to his wife Myra Jackson from 1911 until her death in 1960. They had a child named Paul (* 1912). Edward Von Sloan died in San Francisco at the age of 81.
