Cologne (Minnesota) is a city in Carver County in the US state of Minnesota , which was named after the city of Cologne by its German founders .

history

Cologne State Bank (ca.1915)

Gerhard Lülsdorf (born April 25, 1827 in Cologne), who emigrated in 1853, was one of the first Cologne settlers in this area. Paul Mohrbacher (* March 6, 1847 in Sand / Kusel , † February 1, 1935 in Cologne) is considered the founder of Cologne . He was baptized on March 7, 1847 in Kübelberg , arrived on June 26, 1856 with his parents by ship in New York and was registered with his parents in neighboring Benton during the 1860 census . The St. Bernards Catholic Church was built in 1877 across from Benton Lake. As early as 1856, 19 families met in the Mohrbachers' house for masses led by Pastor Mehlmann. Paul Mohrbacher applied for naturalization in 1885 and became a US citizen on January 27, 1897. He married Gertrude Catherine Meuwissen on February 10, 1872 (born June 1, 1850 in Schalbruch / Heinsberg , † November 3, 1928 in Cologne) and built his house in August 1880 in what is now the town. On February 9, 1881, he officially founded the place where a grist mill for $ 10,000 had already been built by Hans Güttler in 1880 ("Cologne Mill"). The Mohrbacher couple gave birth to 15 children in Cologne. Paul Mohrbacher was the first mayor ( English civic leader ) of the up-and-coming Cologne. A post office already existed since 1879 with Peter Wirtz as postmaster in his household and hardware store ( english hardware store ). Wirtz was also the first teacher at the school belonging to the church, which was founded in 1880. The first local newspaper, the Cologne Observer , appeared on March 24, 1894 . On May 30, 1897, the first hotel with the name City Hotel , which also had a saloon, opened. The Cologne State Bank opened in January 1903 and merged with the First National Bank of Waconia in February 1987 . Electricity came to Cologne in 1916, Rosa Partoll Knotz became the first female mayor in 1922 and held her office until 1930.

Paul Mohrbacher's house (1880)

The 14-minute amateur film "Cologne: From the Diary of Ray and Ester" by Ray and Esther Dowidat was recorded between July and September 1939 and describes the life of the German-US-American community in the village in the form of a diary where at the time of the Film recordings Henry Mohrbacher (son of the founder Paul Mohrbacher; born September 24, 1874 in Cologne, † March 14, 1951 ibid) ran a saloon. The silent film was listed by the Library of Congress in 2001 as a "culturally, historically and aesthetically significant film" on the list of the National Film Registry . Dowidat's daughter, Adele, had previously videotaped the film and showed it to the Minnesota Historical Society , from where it found its way to the National Film Registry.

On July 1, 1949, the 8.4 km long Minnesota State Highway 284 was opened, which leads via Benton Township and Cologne to Waconia . During his state visit to Cologne on June 23, 1965, John F. Kennedy delivered the greetings of his American fellow citizens and especially the citizens of Cologne (Minnesota), Cologne (New Jersey) and Cologne (Texas) in a speech. The mayor Matthew "Matt" Allen Lein (* 1987) visited the city of Cologne with his wife Carrie on July 18, 2014 and was officially received on July 19, 2014 by the mayor of the "mother city" of Cologne, Jürgen Roters , in the Cologne City Hall . On July 19, 2014, he was a guest at the Cologne Lights . In March 2015, Scott Williams was elected as the new mayor.

In August 2018, two people from Cologne visited the city of Cologne, where they presented gifts from the city of Cologne. It was a letter from Mayor Henriette Reker , a cathedral stone and various Cologne-specific gifts.
