Pádraig Harrington (born August 31, 1971 in Ballyroan, Dublin ) is an Irish professional golfer who plays on both the PGA European Tour and the US PGA Tour . He is a three-time major winner.

Career

After a successful amateur career, in which he was able to win the coveted Walker Cup with the team from Great Britain & Ireland in 1995 , he switched to the professional camp and played on the European Tour from 1996 . In the same year, Harrington won the first tournament at the Spanish Open , but then he literally developed into second place. Towards the end of the 1999 season alone, he had four second places in five events. From 2000 the tide turned and he achieved at least one win a year until 2004. As a result of this consistency, Harrington was able to place seven times in the top 10 of the European Tour Order of Merit money list , including two second and third places. In the 2006 season he was able to win the Order of Merit , which is accompanied by the presentation of the Harry Vardon Trophy , for the first time.

From 2000 onwards, Harrington played increasingly in the USA, especially at the majors and WGC events, as well as on the basis of sponsor invitations. In 2002 he won his first, unofficial, PGA Tour event there. In 2003 and 2004 he was runner-up again, albeit in the highly endowed PLAYERS Championship . From 2005 he was a regular participant on the PGA TOUR , won his first tournament in March, the Honda Classic, and his second victory in June.

In July 2007, he achieved the greatest success of his career by winning the most traditional major , the Open Championship (British Open). A year later he was able to defend this title and won his second major. In August 2008, the third major victory followed, at the PGA Championship .

Pádraig Harrington played six times for the European Ryder Cup team and four times for the GB & Ireland team at the Seve Trophy . For Ireland he appeared five times in the Dunhill Cup and ten times in the World Cup . In October 2007 he was awarded the Honorary Life Membership of The European Tour (lifelong honorary membership of the European Tour) and in December was named European Tour Golfer of the Year .

Life

Harrington's father Patrick ("Paddy") was a well-known athlete in Ireland. He practiced the national sports hurling and Gaelic football in Cork . After his active career, Paddy became a member of the Garda Síochána National Police . In boxing he won the Irish championship of the Garda . His father had his own career as an athlete. As a result, he never tried to live out his ambition or to get some fame through him. Long after his career ended, his father was extremely popular in Cork. A quote from Golfdigest shows on the one hand the admiration for his father's achievements and also the modesty of Padraig Harrington: “I'm still known as his son, rather than him being Padraig Harrington's father.” By this point, Harrington had won the Ryder Cup and several tournaments.

Pádraig grew up as well as the Ryder Cup player Paul McGinley in Rathfarnham. The southern suburb of Dublin is a classic workers' settlement. The family of seven lived on a modest basis in a three-bedroom house. Together with nine other colleagues, his father founded the Stackstown golf club nearby. The men built the square with their bare hands and shovels. The young Pádraig learned to play golf here at the age of four, as did his older brothers. Harrington is characterized by determination, as well as his work ethic and abstinence from alcohol. He said of himself that he was the only Irishman who would n't drink Guinness and only went out with a woman.

The name Pádraig is the Irish equivalent of "Patrick". His four older brothers Tadhg, Columb, Fintan, and Fergal also have Irish names. He met his future wife Caroline at a youth tournament in Stackstown. They have been married since 1997. The couple has two sons: Patrick (* 2003) and Ciarán (* 2007).

Ronan Flood has been working as a caddy for Harrington since 2004. Flood married Susie Gregan, Caroline's sister, in 2007. Hence, he is Harrington's brother-in-law.

Harrington's father died of cancer in 2005 at the age of 72.
