Garda Síochána na hÉireann [ ɡaːrd̪ə ʃiːxaːn̪ˠə nə heːɾʲən̪ˠ ] ( "Guardians of the Peace of Ireland") refers to Irish National Police in the Republic of Ireland . The most common short form in the sense of the collective (the) police is (an) Garda , as the individual policeman is called. The plural (die) policemen = (na) Gardaí [ ˈɡa̪dːiː ] is also often used as a collective term for the police . Colloquially, however, the English word guard is also used in Ireland for the individual police officer (plural and collective name guards ).

The agency is under a police commissioner appointed by the Irish government and its headquarters are in Phoenix Park in Dublin . Ireland is divided into six police regions , including the Dublin Metropolitan Region , each headed by a Regional Assistant Commissioner . Garda carries out all police tasks within Ireland (criminal police, traffic police, property protection, etc.). There has been no municipal police force since the merger of the Dublin police with the Garda in 1925. The Airport Police at Dublin Airport, the Harbor Police and the Railway Police , which operate on the premises of train stations, are not classic police forces , but rather security services . Arrests are only made here by the Garda. Special police services such as aviators, dogs and riders are held centrally in Dublin.

The Gardaí training has been taking place centrally at the Garda College in Templemore , County Tipperary , since 1964 .
