life and career
schooldays
Martin Kaymer comes from Mettmann , where he first attended the Kirchendeller Weg primary school and then the Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium for a few years. Later he switched to the Lore-Lorentz-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf, which was specially designed for sports.
He seriously started playing golf at the age of 10 at GC Mettmann. Before that he also played football. He later started for the Bundesliga club GC Bergisch Land in Wuppertal , where he celebrated his greatest success as an amateur. At the age of 15, he already had a handicap of 0.
Kaymer names the South African Ernie Els as a role model . He is trained by Günter Kessler , who is also the trainer of Bettina Hauert and Marcel Siem . Martin Kaymer lives in Mettmann .
2005/2006
At the end of 2005 he switched to the professional camp with a handicap of +4.8. He started the 2006 season on the EPD Tour , a tournament series for young professionals. With a round of 59, recorded on June 21, 2006 at the Habsberg Classic, he achieved the lowest result ever achieved by a German player in an official tournament. In total, he achieved five victories and won the annual ranking ( Order of Merit ) ahead of schedule. In July 2006 he was able to qualify for the Vodafone Challenge, a Challenge Tour tournament that he won straight away. This gave him the right to start the remaining tournaments of the Challenge Tour 2006. There he reached fourth place in the annual ranking with a second win and further good placements and thus the right to play for the 2007 season of the PGA European Tour . Thereupon he was voted “Player of the Year 2006” by the German section of the PGA.
2007
On the European Tour 2007 he achieved his best result at the Scandinavian Masters , where he was leading until shortly before the end and finished second. With four further top ten placements, Martin Kaymer secured not only the right to play for 2008, but also a starting place in the elite field at the end of the season in Valderrama at the Volvo Masters . There he finished sixth and ended the 2007 season with a 41st place in the European Tour Order of Merit and prize money of 754,691 euros. As a result, the European Tour presented him with the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award as the best newcomer of the season.
2008
At his first tournament in 2008, the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship , Martin Kaymer won his first victory on the European Tour and made it into the top 50 of the golf world rankings for the first time. He became the youngest German winner of a European Tour tournament ahead of Bernhard Langer who was 14 days older when he won his first win. After finishing second at the Dubai Desert Classic two weeks later, Kaymer reached number 21 in the world rankings and received the European Tour Golfer of the Month for January 2008 award . In June 2008 he became the first German and to date the youngest professional to win the BMW International Open , a tournament in which Bernhard Langer took second place five times. With a shared second place at the Volvo Masters, he finished the season in eighth place in the Order of Merit (prize money: 1,794,500 euros).
2009
In 2009 he won two consecutive victories in July: first at the Open de France and a week later at the Scottish Open in Loch Lomond , he won titles three and four on the European Tour. On July 13, 2009 Kaymer reached number 11 in the world rankings. Because of a foot injury that he sustained on the go-cart track during his summer vacation (end of August 2009), Kaymer had to take a break for almost two months before he intervened again in the Castelló Masters (October 22nd to 25th, 2009) . There he achieved a shared second place. Kaymer missed winning the Race to Dubai due to this injury and finished third after he had a promising lead.
2010
At the start of the 2010 season he was able to win the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship again, which brought him to 6th place in the world rankings and thus to the top ten for the first time. By far the greatest success of his young career Kaymer achieved with winning the PGA Championship 2010 in Whistling Straits. From the second round he showed high-class golf and was able to take the sole lead in the final round. After Bubba Watson was open to him, he was able to prevail in the 3-hole playoff. With this victory he was able to improve from 13th to 5th place in the world rankings and also secured participation in the 2010 Ryder Cup . After Bernhard Langer, he is only the second German golfer to win a major tournament is. At the Ryder Cup he won both four-balls (with Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter), shared in the foursome (with Westwood) and lost his singles match. The following weekend he won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews by three shots from Danny Willett . He became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 and the first European since Nick Faldo in 1989 to win three consecutive tournaments. In the world rankings, he rose to fourth place in a row. On October 25th, he improved to third place in the world rankings. At the end of the 2010 season, Martin Kaymer won the Race to Dubai (the Order of Merit) of the European Tour as the second German after Bernhard Langer and was together with Graeme McDowell "2010 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year". This award was presented to two golfers at the same time for the first time in tour history. In addition, he was awarded "The European Tour Players' Player of the Year for 2010" by the tour players of the European Tour.
2011
On January 23, 2011, after his ninth victory, he overtook Tiger Woods by eight strokes on the European Tour in Abu Dhabi, finishing second in the world rankings. A month later, he put himself at the top of the world rankings with his semi-final victory over Bubba Watson and the final at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championships. After Bernhard Langer, he is only the second German to have succeeded. In April, he lost his number 1 status back to Westwood when Westwood won the Indonesian Masters on the Asian Tour .
Kaymer has been with caddy Christian Donald, Luke Donald's brother, since June. At the 140th edition of the Open Championship, Kaymer was third after two good first rounds, but in the end had to settle for position twelve and eight strokes behind the Northern Irishman Darren Clarke .
In November, Martin Kaymer celebrated his tenth success in the 120th tournament played on the European Tour at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai . With nine birdies on the last twelve holes and a 63 final round, he won by three strokes ahead of Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson - the lowest final round ever achieved in a tournament in the World Golf Championships series. With prize money of € 842,218 won , he climbed to second place on the European money list and was able to book more than two million euros in one season for the third time in a row. This was also his first win at a WGC tournament and he is the first German to ever win the championships. In addition, Kaymer secured at least two tournament wins in one season for the fourth time in a row.
2012
At the Dubai Desert Classic, Kaymer achieved the first hole-in-one of his professional career on the seventh hole in the second round .
In April Kaymer survived the cut for the first time in his fifth participation in The Masters and finally finished in shared 44th place.
Kaymer was nominated for the European Ryder Cup team in 2012 . At 13:13, Kaymer won his individual match against Steve Stricker with a "1-up" and provided the decisive 14th point through which Europe remained in possession of the Ryder Cup. The victory was only decided on the 18th hole. Kaymer had 2 putts in the game against Stricker to win the game. He first putted the ball behind the flag from 11 meters before taking the final victory for Europe with the second putt.
On December 2, 2012, Martin Kaymer achieved his first win of the year at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa. In this invitation tournament for 12 players, which is not part of the European Tour, he won prize money of USD 1.25 million.
2013
In 2013 Martin Kaymer played alongside the European Tour for the first time on the PGA Tour , for which he was eligible to play until 2015 thanks to his victory at the PGA Championship. The season ended for the first time since 2007 without a win for Kaymer.
2014
In his second official year as a member of the PGA Tour, Kaymer succeeded in winning its most valuable tournament, the Players Championship . With this victory he reached the top 30 in the world rankings again, before the tournament he was 61st. With the victory at the US Open , he secured his second major title. He maintained the lead during the entire tournament, clearly distancing the competition by eight strokes and setting several tournament records. Kaymer is the first continental European to win the US Open. In October he also won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf . He won the Ryder Cup 2014 for the third time in a row in the European team; he won his singles and reached two more shared matches at the Fourballs / Foursomes. In November Kaymer achieved a shared sixth place at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai , which he had won in 2011, and was still in the lead until the last hole, when he suffered a water hammer (winner Bubba Watson ).
2015
The first tournament of the year brought Martin Kaymer a defeat. At the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January, Kaymer led confidently for three days. On the final day, he surprisingly fell back to third place after he was already six strokes ahead at the beginning of the last round and even 10 strokes ahead after four holes.
