Asian tour

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Asian Tour is a series of tournaments in professional golf that organizes the relevant events in Asia (with the exception of Japan, where the Japan Golf Tour is responsible). It is one of the six leading tournament series of the International Federation of PGA Tours , on the basis of which the golf world ranking is calculated.

The first season in today's format was played in 1995, but there have been previous attempts to host an Asian tournament series. The Asian PGA was founded in 1994 and constituted on the occasion of a meeting with PGA representatives from eight different countries in July 1994 in Hong Kong . In 1998 the Asian Tour became the sixth member of the International Federation of PGA Tours . In 2004 the tour was taken over by a newly formed organization of players who disagreed with the previous management.

Most of the participants in the Asian Tour are naturally Asians, but there are also many Australians and professional golfers from other nations. Since some tournaments are held together with the European Tour and are included in their evaluation, there are also many top European golfers at the start. These events have significantly higher prizes than the rest of the tournaments on the Asian Tour. The total prize pool for the 2008 season was over $ 43 million.

The tournaments with prize money of over $ 2 million are jointly organized with the European Tour, which are mostly dominated by its members. In the remaining tournaments, the payout ranges between $ 300,000 and $ 1.25 million. Asia's most highly endowed tournament is the WGC -HSBC Champions Tournament with $ 7 million , which is only partially included in the Asian Tour's money list as it would distort it too much.
