Club / place
The Gleneagles Hotel is around 70 kilometers outside of Edinburgh and can be reached from there in around an hour by car. In addition to the PGA Centenary Course with the King’s and Queen’s Course , the hotel has two further 18-hole golf courses. There is also a golf academy with a 9-hole par 3 course ( Wee Course ). The hotel has also hosted major international conferences in the past .
history
With the staging in Gleneagles, the Ryder Cup returned to its place of origin. In 1921 the first team comparison between American and British golfers was held here in preparation for the British Open in St. Andrews. The event was then revived after a few years and officially hosted as the Ryder Cup from 1927. In addition to the 2014 Ryder Cup, Gleneagles has also hosted major golf tournaments in the past .
PGA Centenary Course
The course, which was opened in 1980 as the Glendevan Course , was redesigned in 1993 by Jack Nicklaus in the "Risk & Reward" design and reopened as the Monarch Course . On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the British PGA, it was renamed the PGA Centenary Course in 2001 . The course is measured from the championship tees with 7262 yards / 6640 m.

Teams
United States
The nine leading golfers on the PGA money ranking were eligible to start for the US team . These were supplemented with three players ( Captain's Picks ) selected by Captain Tom Watson . In contrast to the last few occasions, Watson did without the four captain's picks that are usual in the USA. The nine seeded players of the US team were already determined on August 10, 2014, after the PGA Championship was over. For Tom Watson it was the second nomination as Ryder Cup Captain, in 1993 he led the US team to the tournament victory. Watson nominated Raymond Floyd and Andy North as vice captains .
Europe
The European team was made up of the four or five best professionals on the European and world money lists. For a player qualified on both rankings, the next best qualified player on the world money rankings moved up.
For Paul McGinley it was the first nomination as captain of the selection, after serving as vice-captain (non-playing) in 2010 and 2012. As with his three participations as a player between 2002 and 2006, he emerged as the winner with the selection from the tournament. McGinley nominated Sam Torrance and Des Smyth as Vice Captains . The nomination phase for the European team ended with the conclusion of the Italian Open on August 28, 2014.
The three captain's picks for both teams were announced after the Deutsche Bank Championship ended on September 2, 2014.
