Sergio García Fernández (nickname: El Niño ) (born January 9, 1980 in Castellón de la Plana ) is a Spanish professional golfer .

career

García was already successful as an amateur. In addition to amateur tournaments, he won a professional tournament in 1997 with the Catalonian Open Championship.

In 1999 he switched to the professional camp with a handicap of +5. In his first year as a professional, he finished second behind Tiger Woods at the US PGA Championship in Medinah. This was followed by victories on the American and European tours.

In 2000 he was awarded the "Sports Oscar" for best newcomer.

He was part of the European Ryder Cup team five times in a row (from 1999 to 2008) and again from 2012 to 2018 . In 2006 Garcia was the most successful player with four wins in five games and only had to admit defeat to Stewart Cink in the final individual match game . He also won the coveted trophy with Europe in 2012, 2014 and 2018 and has been the most successful player ever with a total of 25.5 points since 2018.

In 2017 García won his first major tournament with the Masters Tournament when he prevailed in the jump-off against the Englishman Justin Rose . He is the third Spaniard after his two role models Severiano Ballesteros and José María Olazábal , who was able to triumph in the US Augusta .

In 2018, García achieved his 25.5 with the win against the American Rickie Fowler . Point in the Ryder Cup . So García's Ryder Cup career record was 22-12-7 (wins / losses / draws). With this performance he overtook the previous record holder Sir Nick Faldo , 23-19-4 (wins / losses / draws).

Sergio Garcia is also one of the leading athletes in history on the major tours of professional golf. During his career, he earned 30 million euros on the European Tour (as of September 16, 2019). He is only surpassed by Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy . On the North American PGA Tour, he was in tenth place with almost 50 million dollars in prize money (as of July 20, 2020).
