Gerry Lester "Bubba" Watson, Jr. (born November 5, 1978 in Baghdad , Florida ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR . He is a decidedly autodidact: according to his own account - apart from lessons from his father in early childhood - he never took a golf lesson from a coach.

Career

From 2003 to 2005 Watson played on the second-ranked Nationwide Tour and qualified from the 2006 season for the great PGA TOUR . Thanks to some good placements and prize money of just over $ 1 million, the tall left-hander was 90th on the money list and was eligible to play for the next season. At the US Open 2007 he finished fifth, and with a season prize money of more than $ 1.6 million, Watson managed to stay on the PGA Tour without any problems. In June 2010 he won his first tournament on the PGA Tour, the Travelers Championship .

By far the greatest success of his career he celebrated with the victory at The Masters 2012. Here he was able to prevail in the playoff against the South African Louis Oosthuizen . Watson had tapped his drive far to the right on 10 while Oosthuizen was on the fairway. However, Oosthuizen's second shot failed to reach the green, whereas Watson was able to deliver his second shot through a roughly 30 meter bend onto the green. After two putts he had then beaten Oosthuizen.

In 2014 he won The Masters for the second time after 2012 by 3 strokes .

The game

As an autodidact, Bubba Watson developed some very unorthodox techniques. The most striking thing is probably his drive: he stretches exceptionally far, but above all he does not shift his weight completely onto his right leg during a downswing - as would be the case with a conventional swing for him as a left-hander - but he lifts with both feet at the same time off the floor, opening up his entire stance (i.e. turning his entire body halfway towards the target). At least this technique obviously does not harm his vastness: Bubba Watson is considered a downright long hitter and led z. E.g. the drive statistics of the PGA Tour 2012 with an average of 315.5 yards (approx. 288.5 meters). His very spectacular and risky game, with which he often gets himself into difficult situations, but can also get out of them again and again, is striking. Bubba Watson also has a kind of personal trademark of an aesthetic nature: he always wears his polo shirts completely closed, so not, as is generally the case, with an open top button.

family

He is married to a former professional basketball player. The two are parents of a son, whom they adopted on March 26, 2012.
