The 38th Ryder Cup was originally scheduled to take place from October 1st to 3rd, 2010 on the square of the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport , Wales . Due to a rain interruption lasting more than seven hours on Friday and a longer rain interruption on Sunday morning, however, there were considerable time problems. For the first time in its history, the Ryder Cup had to end with the singles on Monday.
Instead of the two planned game rounds on Friday, not even a complete round was played to the end. The fourballs that had started were played to the end on Saturday. In order to prevent an extension until Monday, the captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin agreed on a short-term change of the mode.
Instead of four fourballs and four foursomes each, the Friday fourballs should now be played to the end on Saturday and then six foursomes. Then the planned mode was to play two foursomes and four fourballs. The weather on Saturday and Sunday morning, which did not allow a game, caused a historical change in the process: the two foursomes and four fourballs that actually ended Saturday were only played on Sunday, so that all twelve singles were moved to Monday. Nothing changed in the total number of 28 matches.
