Colin Stuart "Monty" Montgomerie, OBE (born June 23, 1963 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish professional golfer and with 31 titles on the European Tour one of the most successful British golfers. From 1993 to 1999 he won the European Tour Order of Merit seven times in a row , but he won his first major title later on the Senior Tour.

Life

The early years

Although Scottish by birth and parentage, he grew up in Yorkshire , England because his father James worked there. This later became secretary of the famous Scottish Royal Troon Golf Club and Colin was one of the first British golfers to graduate from an American college, the Houston Baptist University . More recently, some of Britain's top young golfers, such as Luke Donald Montgomery, have followed suit.

Monty won three major Scottish amateur tournaments, the Scottish Youths Championship 1983, the Scottish Stroke Play Championship 1985 and the Scottish Amateur Championship 1987. He played twice for his country in the Eisenhower Trophy , 1984 and 1986, and also twice, 1985 and 1987, for Great Britain & Ireland in the prestigious Walker Cup .

Professional career

Colin Montgomerie at the Austrian Open 2006

In 1988 Montgomerie Professional was awarded the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award (best newcomer) on the PGA European Tour . Within a short time he became one of the top professionals and was called up to the Ryder Cup team in 1991 . From 1993 to 1999 he won the European Tour Order of Merit every year and recorded 31 victories on the tour, including the prestigious Volvo PGA Championship in record series (1998-2000) and the Volvo Masters 1993 and 2002 - the highly endowed final tournament of the respective season.

He was second five times in majors ( US Open 1994, 1997 and 2006, PGA Championship 1995 and The Open Championship 2005), but is the only absolute world-class golfer who has not yet won a major . This dubious reputation follows him at every turn.

Monty played eight consecutive Ryder Cup games from 1991 to 2006 and was named European team captain for 2010. In 2005 he was able to win the money list of the European Tour for the 8th time (record) and at the same time was the first golfer to achieve a total prize money of € 20 million on the European Tour.

Since his 50th birthday in 2013, Montgomerie has played on the American Champions Tour and the European Seniors Tour . He won two senior majors in 2014 and another in 2015.

Private

In February 2006, Montgomerie divorced his wife after a long separation and paid a final severance payment of £ 15 million.
