Volvo Masters (golf tournament)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Volvo Masters was the significant and highly endowed final tournament of the PGA European Tour season. It corresponded to the Tour Championship of the North American PGA TOUR . The tournament was held for the last time in November 2008. Due to the introduction of the Race to Dubai , it will be replaced by the Dubai World Championship from 2009 .

history

This tournament has been held in Spain since 1988 and - with the exception of the years 1997 to 2001 - always in the noble Valderrama Golf Club in the province of Andalusia . The prize money advertised grew continuously from an initial £ 351,690 to € 4 million in 2006, of which the winner received € 666,660. Between 2001 and 2004 the tournament was called Volvo Masters Andalucia . In 2002 there were exceptionally two winners: Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie - the two were tied after 2 holes in the jump-off when it got too dark and agreed to split the tournament victory.

Game mode

Only the first 60 of the European Tour Order of Merit money list qualified for the tournament , and the field was not filled even in the event of cancellations. Therefore, in contrast to the other tournaments, there was no cut and all participants play all four rounds. From 2005, the previous year's winner was invited if he had not finished in the top 60 of the current season. On the occasion of the 20th edition, in 2007, all previous winners were invited, some of which, such as B. Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer did not use it.

Until 2006 the tournament was always held a week before the Tour Championship of the PGA TOUR in order to allow double qualifiers to play in both events. After the date of the Tour Championship was brought forward as a result of the introduction of the FedEx Cup in 2007, this restriction no longer existed.
