Like many of the younger British golfing guard, McDowell attended a US university, the University of Alabama at Birmingham from 1998 to 2002. In 2002 McDowell became a professional golfer and won his first tournament, the strong Volvo Scandinavian Masters, at his fourth start on the European Tour . In 2004 he won the Telecom Italia Open and finished the season in sixth place on the European Tour Order of Merit .

From 2005, McDowell also competed in tournaments on the North American PGA TOUR , for which he received enough invitations due to his temporary placement in the top 50 of the golf world rankings . However, he earned so much prize money that he was fully eligible for the 2006 season. However, for the time being there were no further successes and McDowell turned back to the European tournament scene from the 2007 season.
