Steve Jones (born December 27, 1958 in Artesia , New Mexico ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR and winner of the US Open 1996.

Career

After attending the University of Colorado , he became a professional golfer in 1981 and began on the PGA Tour the following year .

After several unsuccessful seasons, Jones won the prestigious AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am for the first time in 1988 and three more followed in 1989, his best year to date with 8th place on the PGA Tour's money list . In the first half of the 1990s he had to take a break for almost three years due to an injury before he was able to play regularly again from 1995. Jones won the most important title of his career by winning the US Open in 1996, and after that he won three more tournaments in 1997 and 1998.

He represented his country at the 1996 World Cup and was vice-captain at the 2004 Ryder Cup .

Jones is married to his wife Bonnie. They have two children and live in Phoenix , Arizona .
