William Ben Hogan (born August 13, 1912 in Dublin , Texas , † July 25, 1997 in Fort Worth , Texas) was an American golfer .
His swing is still regarded today as the perfect sequence of movements. Since Ben Hogan, golf professionals have spent a lot of time on the driving range to improve their swing. The Ben Hogan quote "Every day that you do not spend on the driving range practicing means one more day striving to become a great golfer." Shows his ambitious approach to training. His urge for perfection brought Ben Hogan 64 tour victories, nine of which were major titles. In 1953, at the height of his career, he was the first professional golfer to achieve three major victories ( Masters , US Open , The Open Championship ) in one year.
In 1949 he suffered a serious car accident in which his wife Valerie was only slightly injured - because Hogen had thrown himself protectively over her - but he was seriously injured. Although all the doctors said that he would probably never be able to walk again, a year later, with the greatest diligence and iron discipline, he made it back to the first tee in Los Angeles, where thousands of spectators celebrated him frenetically. On the 5th day of the competition he was defeated by Jack Fleck in the jump-off with 69 to 73 strokes, which was probably due to his emaciated body. In 1965 a panel of American golf journalists declared Ben Hogan the greatest golfer of all time.
It was probably only held back from winning the PGA Championship because of the overlap with the Open Championship. In 1954, Ben Hogan founded a company that manufactures high quality golf clubs.
In 1974 he was among the first golfers to be inducted into the newly created World Golf Hall of Fame .
