Daniel "Danny" John Willett (born October 3, 1987 in Sheffield , England ) is a professional golfer on the European Tour . In April 2016 he won his first major championship with the Masters in Augusta .

amateur

As an amateur Willett was able to win the English Amateur Championship in 2007 and was a member of the Walker Cup team. In 2008 he led the world rankings for amateurs.

professional

In 2008 Willett switched to the professional field. He obtained the tour ticket for the European Tour in 2009 through the Qualifying School . With 8 top ten placements and a 58th place in the money list, he successfully completed his first year as a professional. In 2012 he celebrated his first victory on the European Tour with the BMW International Open in Cologne.

Masters victory 2016

Willett was able to secure his first major win at the Masters with a final round with 5 strokes under par. He benefited from a collapse of last year's winner Jordan Spieth when he lost his lead within the 3 holes of the "Amen Corner" with 5 strokes on hole 10 . Spieth undermined u. a. a score of 7 strokes on the short par 3 of the 12th hole. Willett was then able to win the tournament 3 strokes ahead of Jordan Spieth and his compatriot Lee Westwood . He was the first English Masters winner since Nick Faldo in 1996.
