The Omega European Masters is a traditional golf tournament of the PGA European Tour , which is held every year at the beginning of September. Since the introduction of the European Tour in 1971, the event has been an integral part of the calendar of this first-class tournament series.
history
The predecessor of this tournament was the Swiss Open , which was held for the first time in 1923, and the Scots Alec Ross (winner of the US Open in 1907) was the winner. The event ran under this name until 1981, Ebel Swiss Open in 1982 , and then the name was expanded to Ebel European Masters Swiss Open . For one year (1991) the tournament was called Canon European Masters Swiss Open , and from 1992 to 2000 Canon European Masters . Since 2001 the name is Omega European Masters .
venue
The tournament will be held at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Crans-Montana , 1500 meters above sea level . The course impresses with the panorama of the surrounding Valais Alps. Due to the altitude, the range increases by around 10 percent, which leads to remarkable lengths, especially for the drives of the tour players.
Prize money
The total endowment of the Omega European Masters is currently € 2 million and is thus slightly below the average prize money on the European Tour.
