The European Open is a golf tournament on the European Tour .
The tournament was founded in 1978 and was played on various golf courses in England until 1994 , with the exception of 1979 when it was held at Turnberry , Scotland . From 1995 to 2007 it was named Smurfit Kappa European Open respectively. Played as the Smurfit European Open annually at The Kildare Hotel and Golf Club (K Club) in Straffan , Ireland . In 2008 and 2009 the European Open was held on the Jack Nicklaus- designed Heritage course at London Golf Club in Kent , England. In 2009 the total prize money was just over 2 million euros. For the 2015 season, the European Open returned to the tournament calendar of the European Tour. The tournament took place on the Beckenbauer Course of the Golf Resort Bad Griesbach in the Rottal , designed by Bernhard Langer . The Green Eagle golf course in Luhdorf , a district of Winsen (Luhe) , has been the venue since 2017 .
